General strike in Eastern Kurdistan to protest death penalty
A general strike has been launched in the cities of Eastern Kurdistan on Wednesday to protest the death sentences handed down to two Kurdish political prisoners, Pakhshan Azizi and Warisha (Verisheh) Moradi.
News Center- On Monday, six political parties and organizations in Eastern Kurdistan released a joint statement, calling for a general strike on January 22 to protest the death sentences handed down to Pakhshan Azizi and Warisha Moradi.
In the cities of Eastern Kurdistan, all shopkeepers and merchants have kept their shutters down since morning. Activists, the families of political prisoners, students and political parties in Eastern Kurdistan call on the Iranian authorities to revoke the death sentences against Pakhshan Azizi and Warisha (Verisheh) Moradi.
On January 8, Pakhshan Azizi’s lawyer Amir Raeisian announced the Iranian Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the death sentence against Pakhshan Azizi.
On August 4, 2023, Pakhshan Azizi was arrested in Tehran by Iranian Intelligence Services and held in solitary confinement in Ward 209 of Evin Prison for five months. On July 23, 2024, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced her to death for “armed rebellion against the state”.
On August 2, 2023, Warisha Moradi, a women’s rights defender and a member of the East Kurdistan Free Women Society (KJAR), was arrested by Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence agents while traveling into Sanandaj. On November 10, 2024, she was sentenced to death for “armed rebellion against the state”.
