General strike and protests continue in Mahabad
The general strike started in the city of Mahabad, Rojhilat Kurdistan by shopkeepers and merchants in memory of those killed in the November 2019 protests, continues.
Mahabad- 12 people were killed by Iranian security forces during the first three days of the protests being held in the country in memory of those killed in the 2019 protests, also known as the ‘Bloody November’, that took place across Iran to protest the increase in fuel prices and economic crisis, according to local sources. According to Amnesty International, 304 people were killed in protests that took place in Iran in November 2019.
After the call for a three-day general strike, the shopkeepers and merchants kept their shutters down and people took to the streets to protest the regime in Mahabad.
The people taking to the streets chanted anti-regime slogans and some women protesters did not wear hijab.
The students of the Payame Noor University and the Islamic Azad University and many education institutes in Mahabad boycotted the classes to support the protests. According to eyewitnesses, many gunshots were heard around Firdaus Park and Azadi Square yesterday in the morning.
Armed vehicles blocked roads
The regime soldiers and forces reportedly blocked the main roads of Mahabad with armed vehicles yesterday. Thereupon, the protesters used alleys by chanting anti-regime slogans. In response, many special forces members and armed vehicles were deployed to the region.
