First hearing of retrial of Green Left Party MP Ayşegül Doğan held today

The first hearing of the retrial of journalist Ayşegül Doğan, who was elected as Green Left Party MP in the parliamentary elections held in Turkey on May 14, was held today. The next hearing will be held on October 4.

News Center- Ayşegül Doğan, the former program coordinator of shuttered İMC TV which was shut down by an emergency decree in 2016 and newly Green Left Party MP, was sentenced to six years and three months in prison on charges of “being a member of a terrorist organization”. However, the Turkish Supreme Court of Appeals overturned the prison sentence issued against her.

The first hearing of the retrial was held today by the Diyarbakır 9th High Criminal Court. Ayşegül Doğan’s lawyers Mehmet Emin Aktar and Ahmet Özmen attended the hearing.

At the hearing, her lawyers stated that their client was elected as Green Left Party MP in the parliamentary elections held in Turkey on May 14 and requested the court to write to the Şırnak Provincial Election Board for the confirmation. The court accepted the request.

The next hearing will be held on October 4, 2023.
