At least 20 prisoners died in Iran's prisons in first 6 months of 2023, report says

At least 20 prisoners died in Iran’s prisons in the first six months of 2023, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.

News Center- The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights has released a report. At least 20 prisoners died in Iranian prisons, 13 of them equivalent to 65% of the total cases were Kurdish prisoners, in the first six months of 2023, according to the report.

“In addition to 13 Kurdish prisoners, at least four Baloch prisoners also lost their lives in Zahedan, Zabul, and Golestan prisons, which is equivalent to 20% of total cases.  At least three prisoners from Gachsaran, Kohdasht, and Tabriz also died in Iranian prisons during this period,” the report said.

The report also said that out of the total of 20 prisoners, at least 4 prisoners were killed under the torture of Iranian government agents and seven prisoners died due to illness and delay in transfer to medical centers and that three prisoners died due to suspicious reasons, including poisoning, while four prisoners were also killed as a result of clashes with other prisoners.

The organization pointed out in the report that the Islamic Republic has always opposed allowing independent international human rights institutions to visit prisons for years.

“The main concern is regarding secret security detention centers and prisons, which are not even registered in the official prison list of the Prisons Organization and are mainly managed under the supervision of security-military institutions without any judicial or administrative control.”
