Armed Group Sets Fire to Zenobia Women’s Gathering Council in Deir ez-Zor

The Zenobia Women’s Gathering Council building in the city of Abu Hamam, located in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor within the Autonomous Administration regions of North and East Syria, was attacked by an armed group that set fire to the premises.

News Center — Women’s centers have been subjected to a series of attacks targeting their vital role in empowering women and promoting their participation in society. These assaults — ranging from direct threats to acts of vandalism and arson — are seen as attempts to silence women’s voices and undermine ongoing efforts toward justice and equality.

In a new escalation targeting civil and women’s institutions in the Autonomous Administration areas, the Zenobia Women’s Gathering Council in Abu Hamam was attacked on Wednesday evening, October 15, by an armed group of around twenty terrorists who set the building ablaze. The attack marks another in a series of assaults against civil and women-led institutions in the region.

This incident follows previous attacks on the same council, including bombings, vandalism, and theft, which caused severe damage to the facility and disrupted its operations. The council, which employs four women working in women’s empowerment and community initiatives, is considered one of the most prominent women’s institutions in eastern Deir ez-Zor.

Relevant authorities continue to investigate the incident, describing it as a deliberate attempt to target women’s roles in society and to silence free voices within the Autonomous Administration areas.
