Anti-Execution Campaign in Iran: Prisoners on Hunger Strike

It was announced that hunger strike actions will begin in 52 prisons in Iran to prevent executions.

News Center – The “No to Executions on Tuesdays” campaign, launched against the rising  of executions in Iran, continues. In the 87th week of the campaign, it was announced that prisoners in 52 prisons across Iran would begin a hunger strike.

According to a statement released by the campaign, since September 15, at least 46 people have been executed, including 2 women and 6 Baluch citizens. It was noted that in September alone, the number of executions reached 186, 7 of whom were women.

The statement also included the following: “The brutal execution of Babak Shahbazi, a member of the ‘No to Executions on Tuesdays’ campaign, on the anniversary of the 2022 popular uprising and without a final visit with his family, is a bitter symbol of this murderous regime’s inhumane treatment and human rights violations. The secret transfer of Babak Shahbazi from prison to be executed led to protests and sit-ins among other detainees in the prison.”

On one hand, the government promises “amnesty” to prisoners, while on the other, the ever-increasing number of executions each week reveals its cruel and inhumane reality.

This year, as schools reopened, democratic teachers and students once again took the frontlines in the struggle for freedom and equality. Iranian youth are the nightmare of this government, and in every school and university, activists are rising up to turn them into centers of resistance and to continue raising their voices against the inhumane death sentences of their fellow citizens.

The campaign is directed toward the freedom-loving people of Iran and all human rights defenders. Silence cannot be allowed in the face of these violent and inhumane policies. Our voices must be stronger than any repression and cruelty. Every week, every Tuesday, we rise up in memory of the victims of executions, to demand justice and to defend life.

Life is the fundamental right of every human being, and execution is an unjust act of violence against this right.
