Algerian women: March 8 is a day of struggle, not celebration
Algerian women say the International Women’s Day is a day of struggle, not celebration, “It is a day for women to voice their demands stronger.”
Algeria- NuJINHA spoke to some Algerian human rights defenders and activists to mark the International Women’s Day. In the interview, Algerian activists renewed their demands for equality.
Human rights defender Nadia Ait Zai called on women to keep struggling to obtain their stolen rights. Lawyer and leftist activist Awisha Bakhti said, “We should stop celebrating each other on International Women’s Day. It is a day of struggle, not celebration. We should not celebrate it until we achieve gender equality.”

Karima Moktaf, a social service specialist, said, “The International Women’s Day is an opportunity for women to voice their demands. Cherifa Kheddar, the head of Djazairouna (English: Our Algeria), which is an association for victims of terrorism, said, “March 8 is a day of struggle, not celebration. The International Women’s Day represents the women’s struggle for equality.”
