Amed- Many people, including journalists, lawyers, artists and political activists, were detained in house raids conducted in many cities as part of investigations launched in Amed (Diyarbakır) and Ankara. 49 people have been sent to prison in Amed while the process of those held in detention in Ankara continues. Green Left Party Co-spokesperson Çiğdem Kılıçgün Uçar thinks these detention operations are linked with the presidential and parliamentary elections to be held in Türkiye on May 14.

‘The aim of the operations is to interfere in elections’

“The AKP-MHP government attacks everywhere there is a struggle to create an AKP’s Türkiye. But there are many people resisting the government,” Çiğdem Kılıçgün Uçar said, “Free press workers, theater artists, lawyers and political activists have been resisting for a long time. The struggle of each actually weakens the current one-man regime and AKP government. The detention operations against opposition figures aim to interfere in elections. The government tries to enter the elections by attacking all democratic forces that make efforts so that the ruling party will not win the elections. The detentions, of course, raise concern about the election security. Especially the detention of lawyers and journalists will have a negative effect on election security.”

‘Those advocating democracy will send the AKP to the place it deserves’

Highlighting that there is a very serious resistance against the attacks of the current government, Çiğdem Kılıçgün Uçar said, “The AKP-MHP government will lose; however, it attacks oppositions by using detentions and arrests because it is not ready to lose. There is a very serious resistance against these attacks. Although the government detains and arrests many journalists and those advocating democracy, there are still thousands of journalists and those who do democratic politics. Our society, those advocating democracy and freedom will send the AKP to the place it deserves.

‘The AKP-MHP government will not get the result from these operations’

Noting that the elections will take place between the AKP government and the whole society, Çiğdem Kılıçgün Uçar said, “The whole society has decided in favor of change and millions will reflect this decision in the ballot box. The most important thing for election security is to vote, to protect the votes and break down the wall of fear that the AKP wants to build. We can say that the AKP-MHP government will not get the result from these operations and will lose.”

‘We will win’

The Green Left Party aims to send 100 MPs to the parliament in the upcoming elections. “The Green Left Party may seem like a new stop in these elections with its struggle for democracy and freedom. Women, workers, Kurds and Alevis want the change of the government today. We are the workers and builders of change. We aim to send 100 MPs to the parliament and we will win.”
