Moroccan Play Highlights Women’s Resilience and Resistance

A theater troupe staged “Al-Safia” in El Hajeb, Morocco, marking International Women’s Day and highlighting domestic violence’s impact on women and youth amid social change

Morocco_ The theatrical performances “Al-Safia” tells the story of a family living in constant tension due to the father’s authoritarian behavior and alcohol addiction. This situation affects relationships within the household and creates an atmosphere of instability that impacts all family members

The character “Al-Safia” portrays the suffering of a women trying to keep her family united despit the daily pressures and conflicts she faces at home. The character reflects the reality of many women who find themselves responsible for protecting their children and maintaining family stability under difficult circumstances.

The play also focuses on the daughter “Thuraya,” who grows up this tense family environment. This pushes her to seek attention and recognition outside the family. In the absence of dialogue and emotional support at home, Thuraya turns to the digital world, where she begins live streaming on the ” TikTok “ Platform to create a personal space that gives her a sense of appreciation and connection.

Ikram Bouhbaka, a member of the SCÈNE ESPOIR troupe and the actress portraying Al-Safia, explained that choosing the theme of domestic violence stems from the fact that it remains an issue affecting the stability of many families. She noted that the theatrical work seeks to highlight this phenomenon through the language of art.

She added that the character of Al-Safia represents a woman living under the pressure of patriarchal domination and her husband’s alcohol addiction, yet she continues trying to preserve family unity and protect her daughter from the consequences of family conflicts.

For her part, actress Chaimae Afliflou, who plays the role of the daughter Thuraya, explained that the character reflects the experience of many young people who grow up in tense family environments. This sometimes pushes them to seek attention outside the family, particularly through social media platforms.

She emphasized that theater is an important space for expressing social issues and raising questions about the transformations taking place within society. She added that artistic works may not directly change reality, but they contribute to opening discussions about various phenomena that affect people’s lives.

She also noted that the discussions following the performance showed strong audience engagement with the theme of the play, as some attendees expressed that the events portrayed in the work reflected experiences that people within society actually live through.

The SCÈNE ESPOIR troupe is one of the young theater groups in the city of El Hajeb. It was founded in 2015 by a group of young theater enthusiasts, including graduates of the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts and Cultural Animation. The group works on presenting theatrical performances and organizing artistic workshops for adolescents and youth, contributing to the revitalization of local cultural life and encouraging emerging artistic talents.
