2019 uprising anniversary: a cry against executions and repression in Iran
In its 93rd week, the “Tuesdays No to Execution” campaign protests in 54 Iranian prisons, honoring the 2019 uprising and affirming the Iranian people’s unbreakable will for freedom despite decades of oppression
News Center —The “Tuesdays No to Execution” campaign confirmed that 165 executions were carried out in Iran within a single month, including 72 people in just the past week, one of whom was a woman.
The campaign continues its activities across 54 prisons throughout Iran, entering its 93rd consecutive week this Tuesday, November 11. In its statement issued yesterday, it said:
“On the eve of the November 2019 uprising, we honor the sacrifices of those martyred by the authoritarian regime, paying tribute to their struggle for freedom and human dignity. Since the seizure of power by the Velayat-e Faqih regime in 1979, through the 2019 uprising, and up to the ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ uprising, the Iranian people have never ceased their struggle despite decades of repression, discrimination, and killings. The will of the people has proven impossible to extinguish.”
The statement also pointed out that “in a worrying development, a death sentence was recently issued against political prisoner Reza Abdali, prompting an urgent call for the revocation of the ruling and an end to executions inside Iranian prisons. Reports have also emerged that prisoners Ehsan Afrashteh and Mehdi Farid were transferred from Ward 7 of Evin Prison to an unknown location after being beaten, raising fears that their death sentences may soon be carried out, despite attempts by fellow political prisoners to prevent it.”
The statement continued:
“In a time when the voice of justice is met with repression, imprisonment, torture, and execution, the marks of tyranny appear in painful images of self-sacrifice — as bodies become the final means of protest for those stripped of every other option. Last week, we were shocked by the death of Kourosh Khairi, an Education Department driver in Khorramabad, who set himself on fire in protest after being dismissed from his job. We were also shaken by the news of Ahmad Baladi, an Ahwazi student, who self-immolated after his kiosk was destroyed — a cry of protest against injustice. These tragedies embody the silent pain of people who found in their own lives the only way to express their rejection of humiliation and oppression.”
The statement added:
“In these critical circumstances, the Iranian regime has intensified executions to an unprecedented level in an attempt to silence all voices of dissent. Since October 23, 165 death sentences have been carried out, including 72 people last week alone, one of whom was a woman, and 29 executions on November 3rd and 4th. Official statistics indicate that since the beginning of this year, the number of executions has exceeded 1,313 cases — a shocking figure that reflects how normalized the death penalty has become under a system built on injustice and continuous repression, used as a tool to terrorize society and suppress its aspirations for freedom and dignity.”
The statement emphasized that in the face of this grim reality, the “Tuesdays No to Execution” campaign continues to raise its voice, asserting that no authority can silence the call for truth and freedom. It appealed to all conscientious individuals to turn this cry into a wave of protest in every city and street, stressing that silence and inaction amount to complicity in the killing of innocent lives and their isolation behind the bars of a bloodthirsty Velayat-e Faqih regime.
In the 93rd week of the strike, the men’s ward of Zahedan Prison joined the campaign — a new step in popular solidarity inside Iranian prisons. The campaign announced that it will begin a hunger strike today, Tuesday, November 11, across 54 prisons nationwide.
Among the participating prisons are:
Evin Prison (Wards 6 and 7), Qezel Hesar Prison (Units 2, 3, and 4), Karaj Central Prison, Fardis Prison, Greater Tehran Central Prison, Qarchak Prison, Khorin Varamin Prison, Choubindar Qazvin Prison, Ahar Prison, Arak Prison, Langarud Prison, Qom Prison, Khorramabad Prison, Yasuj Prison, Asadabad Prison, Isfahan Prison, Dastgerd Prison, Shiban Prison, Sepidar Ahvaz Prison (men’s and women’s wards), Nezam Prison, Adelabad Shiraz Prison (men’s and women’s wards), and many other prisons across the country
