Solidarity messages pour in for YPJ as activists demand recognition

Human rights activist Sawsan Shouman stresses that the YPJ’s experience in Ronjava has proven women’s ability to play pivotal roles in defending land and human dignity.

News Center – Amid escalating discussions about the role of women in defense and resistance, regional feminist positions supporting the Women's Protection Units (YPJ) have emerged, as many women sent messages of support to the leadership yesterday, Tuesday, April 28.

Within the framework of the support campaign and message delivery, Lebanese human rights activist and member of the "Nun for Öcalan's Freedom" initiative, Sawsan Shouman, sent a solidarity message to the fighters of the YPJ, affirming that their struggle constitutes a global model in confronting extremism and violence.

The text of the message reads:

"I am Sawsan Shouman from wounded Lebanon. I declare my solidarity with the struggle of the fighters in the Women's Protection Units (YPJ), who have made immense sacrifices in confronting terrorism and defending human dignity and the freedom of communities.

These units have proven through their experience that defending the land and freedom is not exclusive to one gender over another, but rather a shared right and responsibility. Attempting to exclude women from this role, or denying their right to participate within official institutions, constitutes a dangerous regression from the principles of justice and equality for which the peoples of the region have struggled.

I express my full support for women's right to engage in all areas of life, including defense, and I affirm that recognizing the role of the YPJ is a recognition of women's struggle against violence and extremism, and of their right to determine their own destiny.

I call upon all feminist, human rights, and academic organizations, as well as free individuals, to stand by this just cause and to raise their voices loudly to ensure women's full and equal participation in all societal institutions.

Full solidarity with the fighters of the Women's Protection Units, and long live the struggles of women for freedom and dignity."
