KJK: Nowruz is the Symbol of Freedom, Resistance, and Liberation from the History of Genocides
For Nowruz (March 21), the Kurdish Women's Coordination (KJK) called for broadening the women-led struggle to rebuild history for a democratic society based on women's liberation.
News Center – Nowruz represents a prominent symbolic and political milestone for the Kurds, and as it approaches, its messages associated with freedom, resistance, and the renewal of life are renewed. This is accompanied by widespread political and social calls to make the occasion a space for strengthening the democratic struggle, particularly under the leadership of women, and to consolidate the values of liberation and building a more just society.
The Kurdish Women's Coordination (KJK) issued a statement today, Thursday, March 19th, on the occasion of Nowruz, in which it commemorated historical symbols of resistance and conveyed messages regarding the current political process, affirming that Nowruz symbolizes freedom, resistance, and renaissance, and highlights the importance of the struggle led by women.
The text of the statement read: "The Nowruz movement, initiated by Leader Abdullah Öcalan against the patriarchal system of Dhak, which has extended throughout history until today, has left a profound impact over fifty-two years of struggle. It brought peace and freedom not only to the Kurdish people but to the peoples of the Middle East and the world, becoming a historical and social voice for all the oppressed." It added that Leader Öcalan, as the Prometheus of the modern era, continues to renew himself daily in the face of the system of naked kings and exposed gods, lighting the path for humanity like the sun. Despite the conditions of isolation and torture on İmralı, he still maintains the flame of resistance and freedom that Kawa ignited against the tyranny of Dhak in the Zagros Mountains, the land of the Mother Goddess, for the sake of women and the people, drawing inspiration from the spirit of freedom rooted in the tale of Mem and Zin.
The statement affirmed that the current moment is a moment of liberation from the tragic history of genocides and from the predetermined fate imposed on the Kurds and other peoples. "In an era where the wars of brutal capitalism drown humanity in deep darkness, Leader Öcalan's call for peace and a democratic society allows humanity to witness the flourishing of hope for the free life it yearns for. In these lands, the cradle of humanity, social interaction, freedoms, and beauty, the history of spring, enlightenment, and renaissance is being written, replacing the harsh winter humanity has endured."
"The Only Option is a Free Life"
The statement pointed out that rebirth, in the magical formula and philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadî (Women, Life, Freedom), is the birth of a free life, the reality of women embodying Nowruz, and the reality of a people and society that have gained identity, self-organization, self-governance, and the power of will. "We celebrate and commemorate the Nowruz of Leader Öcalan, who, with the philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadî, created for us the opportunity to be pioneers in reshaping humanity and to experience the honor of that. For us women, there is only one choice for life: the choice of a free life. We say the time has come to transform this opportunity for a free life, born with Leader Öcalan, into a national, global, and regional women's solidarity movement to achieve a vital and social renaissance and to ensure the physical freedom of Leader Öcalan."
The KJK added in its statement: "Our march for freedom and Nowruz, led by Kurdish women, faces the task of representing the struggle for a free life and a free society, which arose from women's history and was embodied in the revolution of the women of Rojava, at the highest level. Our struggle, which began with renaissance and grew through resistance, has gained a global reality with the struggle to build a cooperative society, a symbol of rebirth. The level of organizing the cooperative society system will bring us women and peoples closer to a free life. Just as the glorious return of women to a free life through their organizational strength will be a new birth for society. Let us make this Nowruz, which symbolizes the arrival of spring and renewal, a Nowruz of building a new life by establishing our democratic cooperative communities, under the leadership of Leader Öcalan. Let us make Kurdistan the gateway to democratic socialism in the world, especially in the Middle East, by applying the gains we have achieved through the struggle of our people and women by building cooperative communities."
"Let Us Make 2026 the Year of Victory"
The statement affirmed that Nowruz should be an occasion to transform the fire of freedom into a force that unites women, peoples, and all the oppressed against their oppressors. This fire, representing the truth of the Kurdish people capable of rising from the ashes repeatedly, must not be extinguished. The spirit of unity in Nowruz, which has led to victory over millennia, is embodied today by comrade martyr Ahmad Hamim and with this spirit of national belonging, let this Nowruz be a national, democratic Nowruz expressing the people's will and their aspiration for freedom. "Let us make this Nowruz the year of victory for securing the physical freedom of Leader Öcalan, and let 2026 be the year of victory for women, youth, and the Kurdish people in their struggle to unite with their leader."
The statement called on those who carry the pride of a dignified life and insist on their humanity in the face of injustice and patriarchal tyranny to transform Nowruz into a fountain and dance of freedom, a covenant for a free life with Leader Öcalan. To achieve this, everyone must flock to the Nowruz celebrations and declare democracy, launching the struggle that will ensure the physical freedom of Leader Abdullah Öcalan. "We will celebrate the acts of freedom carried out by all the women who rose up, filled the squares in the hundreds of thousands, and formed a bridge. We wish and celebrate the Feast of Eid, which revives the culture of solidarity and harmony in the Islamic world, and hope it will be an occasion for peace, brotherhood, and freedom throughout the world. We call for embracing the call for peace and a democratic society in the face of wars and conflicts stoked between peoples, religions, and cultures, and for building a livable homeland in these lands, the cradle of a mosaic of cultures. We will celebrate Nowruz, where millions of people fill the squares with enthusiasm to radically change the history of wars, massacres, genocides, capitalism, and the obsolescence of the nation-state, and to rebuild history in favor of a democratic society based on the liberation of women. We say freedom will be achieved with Leader Öcalan."
