Law proposal submitted to Iraqi Parliament to combat domestic violence

Women parliamentarians and women’s organizations in the Federal Kurdistan Region have submitted a law proposal to the Iraqi Parliament to combat domestic violence.

Hewlêr (Erbil) - On January 31, women parliamentarians and women’s organizations in the Federal Kurdistan Region had a meeting to draft a law proposal preventing domestic violence. After holding the meeting, the members of the Women's Alliance for Kurdistan visited the President of the Kurdistan Region in the first week of February and submitted their law proposal to him. Their law proposal has been reportedly submitted to the Iraqi Parliament.

“We have worked to make the law proposal to be passed by the parliament”

Remziye Abdullah, a member of the Women's Alliance for Kurdistan, spoke to our news agency about their proposal law combating domestic violence.

“At the meeting, we discussed the proposal law combating domestic violence. Our organization submitted its law proposal to the Iraqi Parliamentary Speaker. We have worked to make the law proposal to be passed by the parliament,” she told us.

“He gave us his word”

 “We drafted a law proposal and submitted it to the Iraqi Parliamentary Speaker. He gave us his word to deliver the proposal to the relevant parliamentarians. He will support us to make the proposal be passed by the parliament,” Şilan Sadiq, another member of the Women's Alliance for Kurdistan, told us.

In 2011, the Kurdish Regional Government passed Domestic Law No. 8 against Domestic Violence in the Kurdistan Region but it hasn’t been implemented. Female parliamentarians and women’s organizations in the Kurdistan Region have demanded the reform of the law.
