Turkish prosecutor decides not to prosecute journalist Gülşen Koçuk
In 2022, an investigation was launched against Jinnews editor Gülşen Koçuk on charges of “membership of a terrorist organization”. After a year, a Turkish prosecutor has decided not to prosecute the journalist.
Amed- On June 8, 2022, 22 people, including 20 journalists, were detained in Amed as part of an investigation launched by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. A Turkish court issued the pre-trial detention of 16 journalists on June 16, 2022.
The names of journalists imprisoned pending trial on charges of “membership of a terrorist organization” are: Safiye Alağas, director of the women's news agency JINNEWS; Serdar Altan, co-chair of the Dicle and Firat Journalists Association (DFG); Aziz Oruç, the editor of the Mezopotamya Agency (MA); Mehmet Ali Ertaş, editor-in-chief of the Kurdish newspaper Xwebûn, as well as Zeynel Abidin Bulut, Ömer Celik, Mazlum Doğan Güler, İbrahim Koyuncu, Neşe Toprak, Elif Üngür, Abdurrahman Öncü, Suat Doğuhan, Remziye Temel, Ramazan Geciken, Lezgin Akdeniz and Mehmet Şahin.
Journalists Gülşen Koçuk, Esmer Tunç, Mehmet Yalçın, Kadir Bayram, Feyinaz Koçuk and İhsan Ergünlü were released under judicial control. After 10 months, an indictment was prepared against jailed 16 journalists and it was accepted by the Diyarbakır 4th High Criminal Court. The first hearing of the trial will be held on July 11, 2023. Meanwhile, the indictment prepared against journalist Safiye Alağaş has been accepted by the Diyarbakır 5th High Criminal Court and the first hearing of the trial will be held on June 15, 2023.
