News Center- Iraq’s first female judge Zakia Ismael Hakki died at 82 on Monday, August 3. Zakia Ismael Hakki was born on November 18, 1939, in Baghdad. After graduating from law school in 1957, she was appointed Iraq's first female judge in 1959.

In 1952, she founded the Kurdish Women's Federation and she served as its president from 1958 to 1975. She had a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the International Labor Union in Switzerland and a Doctor of Law degree from the University of Baghdad.

She advocated for the rights of women

Zakia Ismael Hakki also played an important role in women's struggle. She played a role in the 1991 uprising in Iraq as a lawyer. She fled Iraq in 1996 due to the pressure she faced. She received political asylum in the United States. She returned to Iraq in 2003 and was elected to the National Assembly of Iraq and was an advisor in the drafting of the constitution.
