Zihahe El-Tirkî keeps working despite criticisms

Zihahe El-Tirkî, who earns a living by selling chickens in the city of Hajin, Deir ez-Zor Governorate, says she keeps working without listening to the criticisms of society.

Deir ez-Zor- People living in the city of Hajin, Deir ez-Zor Governorate in NE Syria, have been going through difficult times due to the war. Zihahe El-Tirkî, the mother of five, is one of them. She struggles to survive in her ruined house. She sells chickens in her shop despite the criticisms of the people.

“I don’t listen to the criticisms of society”

Zihahe El-Tirkî is now 40 years old and she has sold chickens for seven years. Speaking about the challenges she has faced, Zihahe El-Tirkî said, “I have been criticized because our society isn't used to seeing women, who sell chickens. But I never listen to the criticisms. After doing the housework, I go to the shop. I stand for hours to wash and sell the chickens. Nothing in life is easy. Women should work to be active and productive in society.”

“I have proven the power of women”

Recalling the control of ISIS in the region and their inhuman practices, Zihahe El-Tirki said, “I was subjected to violence by the members of ISIS. I endured everything despite the ill-treatment of ISIS. I have proven the power of women by keeping working.”
