Qamishlo- 54-year-old Firyal Şêxo lives in the city of Qamishlo, northeastern Syria. For five years, she has been earning a living by canning vegetables to be consumed in winter and selling them with the help of her sister-in-law and her daughter.

In an interview with NuJINHA, she spoke about her homemade products. “I make canned vegetables to be consumed in winter. I also make red pepper paste and fruit roll-ups. I make products upon orders.” Firyal Şêxo first began to earn a living from home by making and selling fruit roll-ups and walnuts on a string dipped in starch grape molasses.

“Gradually, I expanded my business. In the beginning, I faced many problems because I was alone. I received no support. I did everything alone. Although I have no space to market and sell my homemade products, I am happy to support my family and earn a living.”

Firyal Şêxo now works with her sister-in-law and her daughter. They make canned vegetables, fruit roll-ups and walnuts on a string dipped in starch grape molasses at home and then sell them. She wants to expand her business. “I want to support other women to earn a living for themselves. Women should put their projects into practice to stand on their own feet. Women should have their own economic freedom. I want to expand my business more to support other women.”
