Portrait of the day: Berfo Kırbayır

“I left the door open in case my child would come. Days, months, and years passed but my child didn’t come.”

Berfo Kırbayır is one of the symbols of Saturday Mothers. She spent 32 years of her life searching for her child, Cemil Kırbayır. She sat for years at Galatasaray Square with the Saturday Mothers to have her son's bones. However, her life was not enough to find her son's bones. She died on February 21, 2013, at the age of 106. On February 6, 2011, she met Tayip Erdoğan (he was the Prime Minister at that time) at the Dolmabahçe Palace to find her son’s bones. Erdoğan claimed that they would make efforts to find the perpetrators of Cemil Kırbayır. However, he did not keep his promise to her.
