Then, The Urartians settled in the Van city and carved ringtail cats on ornaments. Van Cats are called “Pishik” by local people. Van cats are not only pets but also friends and members of families for people. They are very clever and tidy cats. These cats control their food with their paws before eating.
They are threatened by extinction
Van Cat Research Center has carried out works to provide food and health services to the cats and to protect them. Despite the center, the Van Cats are threatened by extinction. People say that Van Cats spent summer on mountains and winter in houses in the past. Being rare species, Van Cats have been taken away from their nature and for this reason, their number is rapidly decreasing.
