Lebanon – Susan Ebu Seid, an environmental journalist, stated that climate change is the greatest challenge of the 21st century. Human activities and natural processes, such as changes in the sun's energy and volcanic eruptions, also affect the earth's climate, she said, “More than 90% of the cause of climate change is about human activities such as electricity production, electricity-transmission policies, wars, and conflicts. Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have released large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which has caused global warming.”

Alarming rise in global temperatures

Talking about the effects of humans on environmental degradation, Susan Ebu Seid said, “Before, there were doubts about the role of humans on the environment. But the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reveals that global warming is mainly caused by human activities. The report also warns us to change our methods in fighting climate change. The report also underlines that the climate changes we experience will increase with additional warming. We see the effects of climate change in many countries. For instance, many countries have recorded the highest temperatures. In some parts of Kuwait and Iraq, the temperature has exceeded 50 degrees. Scientists express their concern that some parts of the Middle East will become uninhabitable by 2050.”

“We will face disasters!”

“We have experienced severe storms due to extreme snowmelt,” Susan Ebu Seid said, “At the Glasgow Climate Change Conference, the scientists warned the countries and said that some countries could be wiped off the map due to global warming. This warning is actually a scream. This could be a disaster for humanity and we will probably face the term “climate refugees” in near future. If the countries joining the Glasgow Climate Change Conference don’t take necessary measures, we will face disasters. “

Climate change affects women

Pointing out that climate change affects all people, particularly women, Susan Ebu Seid said, “The impact of climate change on women varies according to their region, generation, age, and class. The sixth report that I mentioned before states that the most vulnerable groups are women and poor people. According to statistics, 70 percent of women out of 1.3 billion people live below the poverty line. We need strategies to adapt to climate change.”
