Shahba- The siege and embargo imposed by the Syrian government on the Shahba region continue. Since the power plant runs out of fuel in the region, the people of Shahba have had no electricity for 15 days because the Syrian government does not allow entering the region.

NuJINHA spoke to the women of Shahba and displaced women of Afrin living in Shahba.

‘We make effort to provide water and bread to people’

 Emîna Reşîd, member of the Water Committee of Ehdas Municipality in Shehba, talked about the difficulties faced by the people of the region due to the siege. “We cannot provide electricity due to the lack of fuel. We make efforts to provide water and bread to people. If the Syrian government keeps imposing the siege, we will not be able to provide water and bread.”

‘The siege makes the lives of civilians dangerous’

Emphasizing that if the people could not meet their basic needs due to the siege and embargo, it would lead to a humanitarian catastrophe, Emîna Reşîd said, “The siege makes the lives of thousands of civilians dangerous. The Syrian government must lift the siege on Shahba now.”

‘Our children continue their education with limited opportunities’

Hiyam Mihemed is one of the displaced women of Afrin, who live in Shahba. Hiyam Mihemed emphasized that the displaced people of Afrin have been resisting all the difficult conditions for six years. “The siege has been imposed on the region for several years. The Syrian government has not allowed fuel and medical supplies to enter the region. Our children continue their education with limited opportunities despite the cold weather. We are Kurdish people resisting such policies for years,” Hiyam Mihemed said.

Hiyam Mihemed said that the policies of the Syrian government would never stop their resistance and struggle. “If the Syrian government keeps obstructing the access to fuel to the region, we will have no water and bread. We will resist despite the limited resources.”

‘This siege is supported by states’

Hemîda Henan talked about the lack of medical supplies in the region due to the siege. “Many hospitals in Shahba are out of service due to the siege. We cannot receive treatment when we get sick. The Syrian government obstructs the access to fuel and medical supplies to the region. Our children go to school despite the cold weather. All we demand is the lift of the siege. We will resist despite everything.”
