“If he is released, he will kill me and my family,” Gülizar Karaman says

Gülizar Karaman was shot and injured by Aziz Karaman after filing for divorce. Reacting to the indictment prepared by the prosecutor on the charge of “injuring”, she said, “His intention was not to injure but to kill me.”

Amed – On 30 May, Gülizar Karaman was shot and injured by Aziz Karaman in the Ergani district of Diyarbakır province after filing for divorce. Mother of six, Gülizar Karaman was seriously injured while Aziz Karaman was arrested after 11 days for “attempted murder”. The Ergani Chief Public Prosecutor's Office prepared an indictment against him on charges of “intentionally injuring his wife”. Reacting to the prepared indictment, Gülizar Karaman said that Aziz Karaman intended to kill her not injure her.

She was subjected to violence for years

Stating that she was subjected to physical and psychological violence in her marriage, Gülizar Karaman said that she was sometimes subjected to violence until morning by her husband. She filed a criminal complaint when her husband broke her jaws. After filing a criminal complaint against him, Aziz Karaman was arrested and held in prison for a month. However, after his release, he continued to use violence against her.

Her jaws and ribs were broken

“He beat and tortured me every day. He broke my jaws and ribs. I was always subjected to violence by him. I could not tell anything to my family because I was afraid that he would hurt my family,” Gülizar Karaman told us.

He forced her to commit suicide

“I beat you so that you can't stand it and kill yourself. Thus, I will not have to kill you,” Aziz Karaman told Gülizar Karaman when she asked him why he beat her. “He used all forms of torture against me and my children. He threatened my children to kill me by showing his gun. The torture started at night and ended in the morning. Once he broke my jaws and gendarmeries came to our house. I was sent to a women’s shelter. He threatened me when I stayed in the women’s shelter,” Gülizar Karaman told us to explain what she had faced.

Threats continued after she left the women’s shelter

Gülizar Karaman continued to face the threats of Aziz Karaman after she left the women’s shelter. “He kept threatening me after I left the women’s shelter. He promised not to beat me anymore. I did not accept to be subjected to torture anymore. I did not tell my family anything for months. He made my life a misery.”

“His intention was not to injure but to kill me”

Reacting to the prepared indictment, Gülizar Karaman called for justice and said, “If he is released, he will kill me and my family. His intention was not to injure but to kill me. If I could not have run away, he would have killed me. Three bullets entered my body. There is still a bullet in my body. He shot me to kill me and not to injure me.  The prosecutors should help me. If he is released, he will kill me. This man should be punished. I demand justice and his punishment.”
