Sulaymaniyah (Slemani) - In Kurdish society, women facing social pressures struggle to overcome the challenges faced by them. Social pressures and the burden of child care and housework prevent them from realizing their dreams. Dr. Tavge Ehmed is one of the Kurdish women, who struggled and overcame the challenges faced by them. She is now a professor of the Pharmacology and Toxicology Department at the University of Sulaimani. She is also the first female professor of pharmacology and toxicology in the Kurdistan Region.

“My dream was to become a prosecutor”

After graduating from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Baghdad, Dr. Tavge Ehmed worked as a pharmacist for the city hospitals in Sulaymaniyah for about 10 years. She also played an important role in the activating medical clinics in the city of Sulaymaniyah. After 10 years, she did her master’s degree and then received her professor title at the University of Sulaimani. “My childhood dream job was to become a prosecutor and be a university lecturer. Then, I studied pharmacology and toxicology and became a university lecturer in 2009,” she told us.

“I received my professor title in a short time”

Tavge Ehmed worked as a pharmacist for 10 years and then decided to study in order to become a university lecturer because her dream was to be a lecturer. “Studying again was very hard for me after years. But my dream was to be a university lecturer so I decided to study again in order to realize my dream. I became a university lecturer in the Pharmacology and Toxicology Department at the University of Sulaimani in 2009 and became a professor in 2012. I received my professor title in a short time. I had children during my education. Although my family supported me, looking after my children was very difficult for me. I tried to keep the balance between my family and dreams. If you have dreams, you should realize them by believing in yourselves.”

“Women should be supported”

Noting that people should make efforts for their goals, Tavge Ehmed said, “People must gather all their strength to achieve their goals. I worked hard to achieve my goals. The people, who want to realize their dreams, should work non-stop in order to realize their dreams. Women should be supported to realize their dreams since most of the burdens of family are on the shoulders of women.
