News Center- The Research Center of the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK-AR) has released its “Unemployment and Employment Outlook in May” report. Hanife Kardaş, co-chair of the Diyarbakır Branch No.2 of the Public Services Employees Union of Turkey (Genel-İş) affiliated with the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DISK), told NuJINHA that the unemployment rate of women increases in Turkey every year because of the government's anti-women policies. “The government thinks that women should stay at home and care for the children,” she added.
"Women are the victims of war"
Stating that unemployment rate, especially unemployment rate of women, are on the rise in Turkey due to Turkey’s war policies, Hanife Kardaş said, “Women are affected more by war all around the world. In Turkey, women are also the victims of war because the AKP waged a war in order to maintain its power.”
"This government cannot solve the unemployment of women”
Stating that the appointed mayor to the municipalities in the Kurdish region first targeted women's centers and organizations, she said, “They closed all of our organization after being appointed to the municipalities. They threatened to fire female employees. In 2019, 2,500 municipal employees were dismissed and 35% of them were women. And 95% of those reemployed were men. During the period of Münir Karaloğlu, the appointed mayor of the Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality, less than five women out of thousands of people returned to work. This government cannot solve the unemployment of women. In this sense, women's organized struggle is critical.”
