Kobanê getting ready for IWD with enthusiasm of ‘historic call’

Kobanê has been getting ready to celebrate International Women’s Day with the enthusiasm created by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan’s “Call for Peace and Democratic Society”.

Kobanê (Kobani)- Women have accelerated the preparation for International Women’s Day, annually celebrated on March 8. The women of North and East Syria, who will welcome IWD with the enthusiasm of the historic call made by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan on February 27, have also accelerated the preparation.

As International Women’s Day is approaching, the streets of Kobanê, a city in the Euphrates Canton of North and East Syria known for its resistance against ISIS, overflow with enthusiasm. The Hîlala Zêrîn Culture and Art Movement and the Baqî Xido Culture and Art Center will organize various activities and events in the city on March 8.

NuJINHA spoke to Fatma Xelîl, one of the executives of the movement, about their activities and events for International Women’s Day.

Fatma Xelîl first wished a happy Women’s Day to all women. “We have prepared a program in cooperation with the Kobanê Culture Council and youth groups. Folk dancing groups and music groups will perform on March 8. I am also a member of mothers’ folk dancing group. Singers will also take to the stage.”

With the spirit of the ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ slogan

The resistance at the Tishreen Dam has added another meaning to March 8, Fatma Xelîl emphasized and said, “Everyone has witnessed how women resist on the dam. Not only women but also young people are determined to protect their dam.”

The groups have rehearsed for their performances at the Baqî Xido Culture and Art Center. “Today, we are at the center to watch the groups' performances. I hope that everyone will support women’s struggle for freedom, equality and rights. We must welcome IWD the spirit of the ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ slogan.”
