Hojin Hêriz: The revolution in Rojava paves the way for free art

“The revolution in Rojava paves the way for free art,” said Hojîn Hêzin, a TV presenter, Kurdish teacher and singer in North and East Syria.

Qamishlo- Presenting the Awazên We program broadcast on Rojava TV channel, Hojîn Hêriz is also a Kurdish teacher, singer and songwriter. In an interview with NuJINHA, she spoke about the opportunities that the revolution in Rojava has offered her. Born in the Xenamiyê village of Dirbêsiyê (Dirbasiyah) town, northeastern Syria, Hojin Hêriz was a member of the Martyr Zilan musical group from 2008 to the beginning of the Rojava Revolution.

 Since the revolution, she has been a member of the Kurdish Culture and Art Movement. Since she learned her mother tongue, she has worked as a Kurdish teacher. She has been working as a TV presenter; she presents the Awazên We program broadcast on Rojava TV channel. In recent years, Hojîn Hêriz aims to produce personal artwork.

‘I focus on women and revolution in my artwork’

Hojîn Hêriz is also a music video director. “I am the director of the music video titled, ‘Hasekê’, which tells the resistance against ISIS. I also directed the music video titled, ‘Şehîd Sêalê (Martyr Sêalê).  I dedicated this video to my sister, who was martyred while fighting ISIS. Another music video directed by me is ‘Welato’. As a Kurdish woman, I feel indebted to the revolution. Art is a way for me to express the pain, resistance and experiences of people. I mostly focus on women and revolution in my artworks,” she said.

‘The revolution paves the way for free art’

“The revolution in Rojava Kurdistan paves the way for free art. Thanks to the revolution, we have opportunities to freely produce artworks,” Hojîn Hêriz said, “In the 10 years of the revolution, I have witnessed how art, especially women’s art, has been developing.  Artists, singers, filmmakers and songwriters have produced beautiful, meaningful and valuable artworks to develop Kurdish art. The revolution has created many opportunities for us and liberated women. Undoubtedly, the founder and leader of the revolution is Abdullah Öcalan.”

Speaking about the TV program presented by her, Hojîn Hêriz said, “I present the Awazên We program broadcast on Rojava TV channel. The aim of the TV program is to give information about Kurdish artists, singers. We tell the life stories and artworks of many Kurdish artists, singers and dengbej such as Meryem Xan, Eyşe Şan, Şakiro, Mihemed Şexo, Martyr Mizgin, Martyr Serhed and Martyr Sefkan.”
