Hasakah- Despite the ongoing Turkish attacks, the Hîlala Zêrîn Cultural Movement and the Mesopotamia Tev-Çand Center have formed five musical groups, a dance group called, “Martyr Sosin Bîrhat” and a theatre group called, “Meşaleya Azadiyê (English: The Torch of Freedom)” in Til Temir. In an interview with NuJINHA, Reşa Elo, a member of the movement, who believes in the transformative and healing power of art, talked about the activities of the movement.

“The Hîlala Zêrîn Cultural Movement is a women’s art movement,” she said, “We tell the effects of war through art. We resist war with our art and want to build a life without war. The Hîlala Zêrîn plays an important role in the formation of new generations and new groups. In recent months, we formed the Martyr Sosin Bîrhat Dance Group and the Meşaleya Azadiyê Theatre Group. Our aim is to convey our messages through art.”

‘We know the seeds that we have planted will grow one day’

Speaking about the topics of the theatre group, she said, “One of the topics is the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. We try to give importance to fundamental issues that concern the whole society. We try to shed light to the problems faced by the people due to the ongoing war. We know the seeds that we have planted will grow one day. All members of the theatre group write the play scripts together.”

‘Women play an important role in art’

Pointing to the important role of women in art, she said, “Women play an important role in art. We address the problems and their solutions to our society through theatre. These days, we have been working on a new play. All arts have a transformative and healing power but theatre is more effective.”

Reşa Elo defines theater as the historical treasure of the people. “All theatre groups should see themselves as a treasure that adds new things to societies. Art connects us to the past. It tells what happened in the past. One of our main duties is to support our people despite the ongoing Turkish attacks. We try to educate our society, believing that we are also part of society and that freedom requests a revolution.”

‘We express our reactions through art’

In the interview, Reşa Elo also talked about their activities in the future. “We have daily, monthly and annual plans. We organize our activities according to these plans. We express our reactions to the attacks on our region through art. We will keep carrying out our art activities despite the ongoing Turkish attacks.”
