Brazilian feminist groups and academic centers joined ‘We are all YPJ’ campaign supporting Rojava’s YPJ, affirming women’s struggle intersects against patriarchal violence and for defending rights and gains.
News Center_Brazilian feminist organizations and academic centers that participated in the campaign to support the Women’s Protection Units(YPJ) affirmed that their support stems from a firm conviction in the unity of feminist struggle across borders.
Feminist organizations and academic centers in Brazil have announced their joining of an international campaign carrying the slogan “We are all YPJ, and YPJ represents us,”in support of the YPJ in Rojava, one of the most prominent women’s forces that confronted ISIS in recent years.
This step comes after the Joint Events Platform of Women’s Movements and Organizations launched a global campaign on April 26 aimed at highlighting the challenges facing women amid the escalation of patriarchal and military attacks on their rights around the world.
The participating Brazilian entities affirm that their support comes within the framework of cross‑border feminist solidarity, bringing together similar struggle experiences.
The YPJ has enjoyed international respect since its prominent role between 2013 and 2016 in confronting ISIS, becoming a symbol of women's resistance and their pursuit of a leadership role in society.
In the same context, Brazil has a long history of women's struggle, from indigenous peoples who defended their lands, through Quilombola communities, to women in favelas who face mafia violence, in addition to academics and researchers who find in the YPJ's experience an inspiring model.
Brazilian organizations point out that their country, which lived under military rule until 1985, accumulated extensive experience in popular and underground resistance, in which women played a pivotal role.
This legacy of struggle continues today in several regions such as Mato Grosso, the Amazon, Bahia, and in major cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, and Porto Alegre.
The first campaign activities were launched in the city of São Paulo, initiated by the "Feminists Against Fascism and Socialism (FAS)" group, the "Women of North Rojava" organization, and the NUPIEC academic center specialized in Kurdish studies.
This initiative aims to introduce Brazilian society to the experience of the women of Rojava and highlight the intersections between the struggles of women in both regions.
The FAS group affirmed in a statement that "the struggle of Kurdish women and the struggle of women in Brazilian favelas are similar, and that defending the body and land is a natural right, making the YPJ's battle part of our battle as well."
Members of the NUPIEC center stressed the important role played by the YPJ in defeating ISIS, considering that they "lead a revolution that protects education, language, cultural institutions, and women's laws," warning of the interim Syrian government's attempts to roll back women's gains, and affirming the necessity of protecting the YPJ's resilience.
It is worth noting that the campaign began in Brazil with a series of awareness activities, and is set to expand during May and June through the organization of events, seminars, and discussion circles in various Brazilian and Latin American cities, under the slogan "We are all YPJ."
