Hasakah- The Young Women’s Union in North and East Syria has launched the “It’s time to lead for freedom” campaign to support the “Call for Peace and Democratic Society” made by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan from the prison island of Imrali on February 27, 2025.
‘His letter gives us hope’
Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan sent a letter from the prison to young people. “In his books, he always emphasizes the dynamism of young people in society,” said Bêrîtan Roj, Spokesperson of the Young Women’s Union. “In his letter, leader Öcalan says young people must be always active to build a free society. The letter of leader Öcalan is a very important letter for us, giving us hope.”
‘The aim is to destroy women’s identity’
Bêrîtan Roj drew attention to the misogynist policies against women's identity, labor and struggle and said, “As it is known, an interim government led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) was formed following the fall of the Baathist regime. This government has committed massacres against people. They aim to destroy women’s identity and the women’s revolution and prevent women’s struggle for freedom by using various oppressive methods.”
Bêrîtan Roj believes that the current process in Syria requires a new process of struggle, resistance and organization.
“We express our solidarity with all young women. As the Young Women’s Union, we organize ourselves not only in North and East Syria but also across Syria. The door of the union is open to all young women aiming at preserving their identity, culture and existence. As the union, we have launched a new campaign with the motto, ‘It’s time to lead for freedom’ to support the call of leader Apo and all young women. As part of this campaign, we will hold various activities such as seminars and training. The campaign will continue until we ensure the physical freedom of leader Öcalan and organize all young women.”
‘We will achieve our goals’
At the end of her speech, Bêrîtan Roj called on all young women to support the call of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. “Leader Apo always stands with women, women’s struggle for freedom. Therefore, freedom will be achieved under the leadership of women. We will achieve our goals by following the ideology of leader Apo.”
