Yazidi women join 188 Alliance
The Yazidi Free Women's Movement (Kurdish: Tevgera Azadiya Jinên Êzîdî-TAJÊ) has joined the 188 Alliance to fight for the withdrawal of the amended Iraq’s Personal Status Law.
News Center- On January 21, 2025, the Iraqi parliament approved three draft laws, including the amended Personal Status Law despite all the protests.
The amended personal status law gives Islamic courts increased authority over family issues, including marriage, divorce and inheritance, and allows clerics to rule according to their interpretation of Islamic law.
Following the approval of the laws, the 188 Alliance, consisting of more than 150 NGOs in Iraq, announced that they would appeal to the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court against the amended personal status law.
The Yazidi Free Women's Movement (Kurdish: Tevgera Azadiya Jinên Êzîdî-TAJÊ) has announced that the movement has joined the 188 Alliance to fight for the withdrawal of the recent amendments to Iraq’s Personal Status Law.
“The mindset that approved the amendments to Iraq’s Personal Status Law is the same mindset of ISIS,” the TAJÊ said in a written statement. “Great efforts were made to prevent the amendments. As Yazidi women, we expressed our reaction to the amendments together with women across Iraq. Despite all the protests and objections, the Iraqi parliament approved the amended personal status law. The amendment is against the Iraqi Constitution, international law and human rights. As the TAJÊ, we strongly condemn the amendment.”
Recalling the 188 Alliance would appeal to the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court against the amended personal status law, the movement said, “As the TAJÊ, we announce that we have joined the 188 Alliance to fight for the withdrawal of the amended Iraq’s Personal Status Law.”
