The United Nations expressed deep concern yesterday, Thursday, July 9, over the continued drone attacks and disease outbreaks, particularly cholera, in the Kordofan region of Sudan, warning of the impact on civilians' ability to access essential services.
The Spokesperson for the Secretary-General noted that reports from North Kordofan indicate ongoing drone strikes, including an attack targeting a water truck in the Hamrat al-Sheikh area, which resulted in civilian casualties and further disrupted access to water supplies.
He explained that the disruption of essential services comes as cholera continues to spread across Kordofan, noting that humanitarian partners reported a suspected case in El Obeid days earlier. The ongoing drone attacks have caused acute water shortages, with current supplies covering only 20 percent of the city's needs.
He added that efforts continue to respond to the cholera outbreak, noting that the World Health Organization has pre-positioned response supplies in El Obeid.
