Turkey: Men kill 22 women in June
In Turkey, 22 women were killed by men and 27 more died under suspicious circumstances in June, according to the report released by the We Will Stop Femicide Platform (KCDP).
News Center- We Will Stop Femicide Platform (Kadın Cinayetlerini Durduracağız Platformu-KCDP) has released its June report on femicide by compiling the news from local and national newspapers, news websites and news agencies. 22 women were killed by men and 27 more died under suspicious circumstances in June, according to the report.
6 women were killed for making decisions about their lives
According to the report, six of 22 women were killed by men on the excuse that they asked for a divorce, refused marriage, or dating proposal and made decisions about their lives; two women were killed on the excuse of financial reasons; one was killed on the excuse of applying for child custody. The excuses of men for killing 13 women were not determined.
‘41% of women were killed by their husbands’
“The reason why the excuse of men for killing 13 women was not determined is that the cases of violence against women and femicide are invisible. Gender-based violence and femicide will continue without the determination of by whom and why women were killed, unless a fair trial is conducted in these cases and unless preventive measures are implemented,” the report said. “41% of the women killed in June were killed by their husbands. 55% of them were killed at home and 55% by firearms.”
‘There is a significant increase in suspicious deaths’
The report also includes data on women, who died under suspicious circumstances. “There is a significant increase in suspicious deaths of women. Effective investigations must be launched in such cases to find out whether women were killed or died by accident; whether they committed suicide or were driven to suicide.”
