Turkey: 10,471 girls were married in childhood in 2023
In Turkey, 10,471 girls at the age of 16-17 were married in 2023, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) announced on Thursday.
News Center- Child marriage is still prevalent in Turkey. The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) released the “Marriage and Divorce Statistics 2023” on Thursday. 10,471 girls and 706 boys at the age of 16-17 were married in 2023, according to the statistics.
According to the statistics, 172 of the men, who married girls under 18, were divorced men and widowers: 168 of them were divorced men and four were widowers. About 600 girls were married off to men at the age of 30-45. In 2023, Antep was the city where the most girls were married before they reached 18. According to the statistics, 960 girls were married at the age of 16-17 in Antep and 928 were married in Urfa.
