Torches lit for Newroz in Southern Kurdistan
Fires were lit in many cities of Southern Kurdistan to welcome Newroz.
News Center- Newroz has been celebrated in many cities of Southern Kurdistan, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Yesterday, Newroz was celebrated in Duhok, Erbil, Qandil and Halabja. People held torches and danced.
Duhok
Young people celebrated Newroz in Akre, a city in the Duhok Governorate, by burning Newroz torches. Holding torches, they marched to Girê Top, Kelê and Kela Kewvin hills surrounding the city. Then, they lit the fire of Newroz on the hills.
In Duhok’s Zakho town, people held various activities to celebrate Newroz. Tens of thousands of people gathered in an area near the ancient Delal Bridge, an ancient stone bridge over the Khabur river in the town of Zakho to celebrate Newroz.
Hewlêr (Erbil)
The fire of Newroz was lit at the Şanedar Park in Hewlêr with the participation of hundreds. Kurdish singers took to the stage and people danced around the fire.
Qandil
Young people lit the fire of Newroz in Qandil while chanting slogans such as “Bijî Serok Apo (English: Long live leader Apo)” and “Be Serok jiyan na be (English: No life without leader)”. Thousands of people from four parts of Kurdistan participated in the celebration by wearing their traditional clothes.
Halabja
People of Halabja celebrated Newroz yesterday in the village of Celîle. After lighting the Newroz fire, people danced around the fire.
