Shahba- In 2018, Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions occupied Afrin. The Turkish occupation of Afrin displaced thousands in Afrin. Most of the displaced people of Afrin have been staying in the internally displaced people camps in Shahba since 2018. In an interview with NuJINHA, Zelûx Bekir, Co-chair of the Education Institution in Afrin-Shahba Canton, talked about the inhuman practices faced by the people of Afrin.

‘The Turkish state has committed crimes against humanity in Afrin’

The Turkish state started its attacks on Afrin after Russia withdrew its troops from Afrin.

“The withdrawal of Russia’s troops shows us how the interests of capitalist countries are the same. The war policies implemented in North and East Syria aim to destroy the system based on democracy and the unity of people. Since the Turkish state occupied Afrin, it has committed crimes against humanity in Afrin to change the demographic structure of the region. The aim of the capitalist regimes, whether regional or international, is to control the Middle East.”

‘The people of Afrin resist despite all the difficulties’

Pointing to the resistance of the people of Afrin against the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions, Zelûx Bekir said, “The people of Afrin showed great resistance. Now, they resist in camps despite all the difficulties faced by them in the camps. Their resistance and determination frustrate all kinds of oppression. Despite the anti-human policies of the anti-democratic and capitalist regimes and the silence of the international community, they resist and struggle.”

‘The people resist the Turkish attacks’

Since the Turkish state occupied Afrin, it has carried out attacks on other parts of North and East Syria, Zelûx Bekir said:

“During the revolution, also known as Arab Spring, people took to the streets in many Middle Eastern countries to demand a free and democratic life. However, their hopes were frustrated due to the conspiracies of foreign countries. The aim of the Turkish state is to revive the Ottoman Empire. The people of North and East Syria resist the Turkish attacks despite everything.”
