Qamishlo- The Syrian Women’s Council is a women’s organization in North and East Syria aiming to fight violence against women and children and empower women in all spheres of life.

 The council was founded in September 2018 after the declaration of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) with the aim of combating gender-based violence, defending women’s rights, ensuring social justice for everyone, activating the role of women in society, opening rehabilitation centers for women victims of violence and encouraging women to participate in the labor force.

It carries out activities, protects for women

 “The Syrian Women’s Council has developed projects for women and children since it was founded in 2018. It has recently been drafting women’s law, also known as personal status law,” said Evin Kafur, a member of the council.

Noting that the council also makes great efforts for the education of women, Evin Kafur said, “The council has opened centers to protect women victims of violence. In 2015, there was only a center for women victims of violence. In 2022, the council opened four centers in the Cîzirê Region for women victims of violence.”

 They aim to reach all women

 Speaking about 2023 projects of the council, Evin Kafur said, “We have developed three projects for 2023. One of the projects is a mobile clinic project to detect breast cancer in villages. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the region. The project aims to detect breast cancer early and provide training to women about the importance of early diagnosis in treatment. We aim to reach all women."

Factory will open for women

Evin Kafur told us that the council would continue to develop projects for women. “The second project aims to open a center in order to provide psychological support to women. The third one aims to open a paper cup factory to provide employment opportunities for women living in the region,” Evin Kafur said.

 Evin Kafur also talked about the previous projects of the council. “Until now, we have opened 17 kindergartens and three women’s centers. We aim to open five more kindergartens this year.”
