Sophie Binet becomes first female secretary general of CGT
France’s General Confederation of Labour (CGT) on Friday elected Sophie Binet as secretary general, making her the first woman to hold the post.
News Center- Amid pension protests in France, the General Confederation of Labour (French: Confédération Générale du Travail-CGT) on Friday elected Sophie Binet as secretary general, making her the first woman to hold the post since its foundation in 1895.
The General Confederation of Labour is a national trade union center, founded in 1895. It is the first of the five major French confederations of trade unions. In 2017, it had 653,222 members. The CGT, like other protesting workers, is opposing Macron's retirement age hike and pension reform.
41-year-old Sophie Binet, a former school administrator, has led the General Union of Engineers, Managers and Technicians (UGICT-CGT) since 2018 and worked at the CGT on environment issues and gender equality.
