Silvan Co-mayor Naşide Toprak acquitted
Naşide Toprak, elected co-mayor of Silvan Municipality who was replaced by a state-appointed trustee, has been acquitted of “membership in a terrorist organization" and “propagandizing for a terrorist organization”.
News Center- Naşide Toprak, the elected co-mayor of Ferqîn (Silvan) who was replaced by a state-appointed trustee in 2020, has been acquitted of all charges against her.
The final hearing of the trial was held today by the Diyarbakır 11th High Criminal Court. Naşide Toprak was accused of “membership in a terrorist organization" and “propagandizing for a terrorist organization” and faced 22 years and six months prison sentence for attending meetings, events and protests when she was the co-mayor of Ferqîn Municipality and co-chair of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Amed (Diyarbakır) province.
At the hearing, Naşide Toprak was defended by her lawyer Sabahattin Acar. In defense, her lawyer said that his client had participated in protests and events by using her constitutional right to freedom of thought and expression and that he demanded the acquittal of his client.
The court has acquitted Naşide Toprak of both charges.
