NuJINHA awarded Mazlum Bagok Journalism and Isam Abdullah Press Martyrs Prize
The winners of the Mazlum Bagok Journalism and Isam Abdullah Press Martyrs Prize have received their awards. NuJINHA reporter Sorgul Şêxo has been awarded in the category of women's journalism.
Qamishlo- The Mazlum Bagok and Isam Abdullah Press Martyrs Prize is an annual journalism awards, given by the Union of Free Media (Kurdish: Yekîtiya Ragihandina Azad-YRA) to mark the Kurdish Journalism Day celebrated every year on April 22.
An award ceremony was held on April 27, 2023 at the Merîland Hall in Qamishlo, northeastern Syria. The photographs of martyrs of the free press were hung in the hall and the families of Martyrs Mazlûm Bagok and İsam Abdullah, the members of the Movement for a Democratic Society (Kurdish: Tevgera Civaka Demokratîk, TEV-DEM), writers, journalists attended the ceremony.
‘We will always be indebted’
After a minute’s silence for the fighters, who lost their lives while fighting for freedom, YRA Co-chair Malva Elî made a speech. “I wish a happy Kurdish Journalism Day to all journalists. This day is celebrated thanks to the great efforts of journalists, who sacrificed their lives for reporting the truth. We will always be indebted to them.”

After the speeches, the winners of the Mazlum Bagok Journalism and Isam Abdullah Press Martyrs Prize received their awards. NuJINHA reporter Sorgul Şêxo, a journalist based in North and East Syria, has been awarded the Mazlum Bagok Journalism and Isam Abdullah Press Martyrs Prize in the category of women's journalism. Journalist Laleş Ebdurehman has been awarded the Best Documentary Award, journalist Zana Ali has been awarded the best in-depth reporting, journalist Fîras İbrahîm has been awarded the Best Photojournalism Award, journalist Şêrîn Hesen has been awarded the Best Radio Program Award and journalist Şevzan Mehmûd has been awarded the Best Digital Media Award.
Other winners of the Mazlum Bagok Journalism and Isam Abdullah Press Martyrs Prize are: Ehmed Mihemed, Cûma Ekaş, Ebdurehman Mihemed, Delîl Dogan, Derav Ala, Sozdar Ehmed, Newroz Reşo, Lîlav Hesen.
