Nobel laureate backs Öcalan’s call for peace, democracy

Anti-war activist Jody Williams announced her support for the appeal made by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan on February 27, 2025, regarding the peace process and the vision of a democratic society.

News Center – In a message to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (DEM), Nobel Peace Prize laureate and anti-war activist Jody Williams called on Turkey and international institutions to take meaningful steps to support the peace initiative launched by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Williams, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997, reaffirmed her support for building peace between Kurds and Turks, stating: “Like many others, I fully support the renewed efforts to build peace between Kurds and Turks. A decades-long conflict cannot be resolved except through open and honest dialogue, and with a genuine will toward lasting peace and democracy.”

She also highlighted the open letter signed by 88 Nobel Prize laureates in support of Öcalan’s call: “We expressed our recognition of the importance of this appeal and the courageous step to begin resolving the PKK issue and decommissioning weapons in order to establish peace. But change does not happen simply by wishing it. The Turkish state and relevant international institutions must take appropriate steps to support this process.”
