Maryam Nawaz becomes the first female chief minister of Punjab province.
News Center- On Monday, the Punjab Assembly in Pakistan voted to determine the chief minister of the province. Maryam Nawaz, senior leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's (PML-N) and the daughter of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, received 220 votes in the 371-member Punjab Assembly.
She becomes the country’s first woman to govern a province
Maryam Nawaz has been elected as the chief minister of the province and become the country’s first woman to govern a province. The PML-N holds 193 seats in the 371-member assembly.
The opposition Sunni Ittehad Council party, backed by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, boycotted the election held on Monday.
Pakistan held national and provincial polls on February 8, 2023 and the election results were announced on February 11. Independent candidates affiliated with jailed Pakistani political leader Imran Khan’s party won the most National Assembly seats in Pakistan’s general election and the PML-N won the second-most seats in the election.
