Maryam Karimbeigi sentenced to more than 3 years in prison
An Iranian court has sentenced human rights defender Maryam Karimbeigi to three years and seven months in prison.
News Center- Human rights defender Maryam Karimbeigi has been sentenced to three years and seven months in prison on charges of “gathering and colluding against national security” and “propaganda activity against the state”.
Her mother Shahnaz Akmali announced on her social media account that her daughter has been sentenced to three years and seven months in prison.
On 14 June 2022, the house of Maryam Karimbeigi was raided and she was arrested and transferred to Evin prison. She went on a hunger strike in the prison. On 9 July 2022, she was released on a bail of seven billion IRR.
Who is Maryam Karimbeigi?
Maryam Karimbeigi is a woman human rights defender who has peacefully sought justice for the killing of peaceful protesters in Iran since 2009. She is the sister of Moustafa Karimbeigi, a 26-year-old protester who was shot and killed by Iranian security forces in 2009 during the widespread protests against Iran’s presidential election results. She has been advocating for the rights of political prisoners, against the use of solitary confinement and other abusive treatment and precarious conditions of prisoners in Iran.
