Kurdish human rights defender Melike Alp found dead in earthquake rubble after 9 days
Melike Alp, Kurdish human rights defender, was found dead in the rubble of Diyarbakır’s Galeria Business Center, which collapsed in the earthquakes that hit Maraş on February 6, 2023, on the ninth day of the earthquakes.
Amed (Diyarbakır)- Galeria Business Center in Amed collapsed when the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes occurred in Maraş on February 6, 2023. Melike Alp, a Kurdish activist and member of the Human Rights Association (İnsan Hakları Derneği -İHD) Amed Branch, was found dead in the rubble on the ninth day of the earthquakes.
Rosa Women’s Association announced the death of Melike Alp on its social media account, saying, “We lost #MelikeAlp, a human rights activist, co-founder of the Patriotic Women's Association, the first association of the Kurdish Women's movement, the first president of the Women's Commission of HADEP, in the earthquake. We are deeply saddened. We offer our condolences to her family, loved ones and all human rights defenders.”
‘We will remember her with her struggle’
The Human Rights Association Amed Branch also released a message on its social media account. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Melike Alp, a human rights defender and member of our association as a result of the #earthquake. We offer our condolences to her family, relatives, loved ones and the human rights community. We will remember her with her struggle for human rights,” the message said.
