Kidnapping and Sexual Assault Revive Debate Over Violence Against Women in Morocco
Casablanca’s kidnapping and sexual assault case involving a woman has reignited debate over violence against women, highlighting concerns about gender-based violence and the effectiveness of protection and response mechanisms.
Morocco — Discussions continue in Morocco over ways to confront gender-based violence and strengthen the protection of women, amid calls from rights groups to enhance prevention mechanisms, support services for survivors, and develop policies to ensure their access to justice.
Casablanca security services arrested a person on Monday, July 6, suspected of involvement in the kidnapping, detention, and sexual assault of a woman, in a case that has brought renewed attention to the violence women face and the importance of protection measures.
According to the same source, preliminary findings indicate that the suspect lured the victim after pretending to work in transportation services through electronic applications. He allegedly transported her in a small vehicle and detained her inside a garage in a residential complex, where he is suspected of sexually assaulting her.
The case has brought gender-based violence in Morocco back into focus, at a time when rights activists and women’s organizations continue to call for stronger protection measures for women, faster procedures for assisting survivors, and ensuring their access to justice.
Morocco entered a new phase in combating violence against women in 2018 with the implementation of Law No. 103.13 on combating violence against women. The law expanded the criminalization of several forms of violence and introduced measures for the protection and support of survivors. However, human rights and women’s organizations emphasize that the law’s effectiveness depends on proper implementation, strengthening prevention and protection mechanisms, and providing sufficient resources to support survivors of violence.
The incident comes amid continued reports of violence against women, keeping the issue among the major human rights and social concerns being debated in Morocco. There are ongoing demands to strengthen public policies aimed at preventing violence and ensuring effective protection for women, while respecting the presumption of innocence until judicial procedures are completed and a final verdict is issued.
