The Cybercimes Court in Port Sudan issued a ruling in May sentencing Journalist Rashan Oshi to 12 months in prison and a fine of 10 million Sudanese pounds, after she was convicted in a case related to publishing corruption allegatioins against a police officer working at the Sudanese After the Supreme Court reviewed the appral submitted against the ruling, it issued a decision yesterday, Wednesday, July 1, for Rashan Oshi’s immediate release and the annulment of the penalty imposed on her under the Cybercrimes Act, following a complaint filed by a police officer who accused her of publishing allegations of financial corruption on her Facebook page.
The ruling against Rashan Oshi under the Cybercrimes Act sparked widespread controversy in journalistic circles, as female journalists rejected being tried under the Cybercrimes Act and called for the activation of the Press and Publications Act to protect their rights.
