Journalist Beritan Canözer sentenced to prison for social media post shared by someone else

Journalist Beritan Canözer has been sentenced to one year and three months in prison for social media posts shared by journalist Beritan Sarya, who works in Rojava.

News Center- Jinnews reporter Beritan Canözer has been sentenced to one year, 10 months and 15 days in prison on charges of “propagandizing for a terrorist organization”.

The final hearing held by the 4th Diyarbakır High Criminal Court was followed by the members of the Mesopotamia Women Journalists’ Platform (MKGP), the Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG), the Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA), the Platform for Independent Journalism (P24), the he Journalists Union of Turkey (TGS) and many journalists.

“It is not her social media account”

At the hearing, lawyer Resul Temur said that there are four social media accounts being claimed to be Beritan Canözer’s social media accounts and that three of them are not the social media accounts of his client. The lawyer also stated that the Twitter account named “beritansarya” belongs to someone else and the account holder has already announced that the account belongs to her.

The court has sentenced Beritan Canözer to one year, 10 months and 15 days in prison for her social media posts and to one year and three months in prison for the social media posts that were shared on social media account “beritansarya”.
