Iraq seizes municipal building in Shengal's Gir Zerk village
Iraqi police have seized the building of the People's Municipality in Gir Zerk, a village of Shengal (Sinjar).

News Center- Iraqi police have seized the building of the People's Municipality in Gir Zerk, a village of Shengal (Sinjar).
Gir Zerk, one of the villages of Shengal that led the resistance against the genocide committed by ISIS against the Yazidi community in 2014. The village was burned and destroyed by ISIS. After years of displacement, the villagers returned to Gir Zerk and started rebuilding it. The Shengal Autonomous Administration opened the People’s Municipality in Gir Zerk on March 10, 2025 to provide services to the villagers.
The Iraqi police were stationed in the municipal building on Thursday morning without showing any legal documents or reason when the municipal employees were not in the building. The Shengal Autonomous Administration and municipal authorities made several attempts to understand the reason; however, the police told them that they had only received instructions to be stationed in the building.
