Qamishlo- International silence against the ongoing Turkish attacks on North and East Syria continues. At the end of August 2024, a woman and her son were killed in a Turkish drone attack on the city of Qamishlo and a civilian was killed in another Turkish drone attack on Amuda, a town of Hasakah.
The Turkish state has intensified its attacks targeting civilians in North and East Syria for about two years, said Evîn Cuma, Co-chair of the Human Rights Organization in the Jazira Canton of North and East Syria. “The ongoing Turkish attacks aim to depopulate the region. City centers were targeted in many Turkish drone attacks. Most of those who were killed in the attacks were civilians. The aim of the Turkish state is not ensuring its border security, its attacks target critical civilian infrastructure.”
‘The attacks affect all facets of life in the region’
The Turkish state could not get approval from international powers to launch a ground operation, Evîn Cuma said, “That’s why it uses warplanes and drones to attack the region. Yes, people resist but they have no security. The attacks affect all facets of life in the region. Several days ago, a woman and her son were killed in a Turkish drone attack in Qamishlo. The Turkish drone targeted their vehicle and killed two civilians. The situation in North and East Syria will deteriorate if the Turkish attacks continue.”
‘We demand airspace protection’
In her speech, Evîn Cuma called on human rights defenders, international human rights organizations to stand against the Turkish attacks. “We demand airspace protection. These attacks are crimes against humanity. The Turkish government aims to regain its power by attacking North and East Syria. The guarantor states such as the US and Russia are aware of every attack; however, they remain silent.”
‘We document rights violations’
We have dozens of documents proving that the targeted people are civilians, Evîn Cuma stressed. “As the Human Rights Organization in Jazira Canton, we document rights violations and the civilians killed in attacks. We prepare reports and send them to the Violations Documentation Center in Syria and many other human rights organizations.”
