Ilham Ahmed: Recognition of the Kurds Is a Historic Step, but Practical Implementation Is Still Lacking
Kurdish politician Ilham Ahmed stressed that guaranteeing the rights of the Kurds, entrenching women's participation, and establishing clear mechanisms for implementing decisions remain fundamental challenges before completing the transitional process.
NEWS CENTER– Kurdish politician Ilham Ahmed participated in the Middle East Forum (MERI 2026), reviewing the most prominent developments in Syria and the role of women in the transitional phase.
During her participation in the first session of the Middle East Forum (MERI 2026) in Hawler in the Kurdistan Region today, Monday, 12 October, Kurdish politician Ilham Ahmed described the current phase as a transitional one in which Syria still faces major political and social entitlements. She noted that the Autonomous Administration experience presented a model for women's participation, but their role witnessed a decline with the integration process.
She stressed the continuation of challenges related to the rights of the Kurds and women's participation in public life.
On the Kurdish rights file, she considered that official recognition of the Kurdish people, their culture, and their language through a presidential decree represents a historic step, but she stressed that the absence of clear implementation mechanisms, especially in the field of education in the Kurdish language, makes the recognition practically incomplete.
She added that tensions are still ongoing, and that there are interventions seeking to destabilize the region, noting that extremist nationalist tendencies and fanaticism among some groups, alongside external interventions, contribute to undermining stability and obstructing internal understanding.
She warned that the ambiguity of government decisions and the escalation of fanaticism and external interventions threaten stability, calling for translating agreements and decisions into practical steps that guarantee rights and enhance internal understanding.
