Hasakah- After the Turkish state occupied Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ayn) in North and East Syria, thousands of displaced people of Serêkaniyê settled in Washokani camp, an internally displaced person (IDP) camp in Hasakah. The Free Women’s Foundation has held awareness-raising activities and offered training courses to displaced women in the camp since it was founded in 2014. One of the courses offered by the foundation is first aid training courses. Women attending its first aid training courses learn both theoretical and practical knowledge to deal with first aid emergencies.
‘Our aim is to reach all women’
“Our foundation supports displaced women in the camp to overcome difficulties faced by them,” said Jawaher Ezzo, member of the foundation and a resident of the camp. “We organize vocational and training courses for women.” The foundation also provides job opportunities for women so that they can play an active role in society. “Our aim is to reach all women in the camp. Women come together thanks to communes in the camp. In addition to vocational and training courses, we also organize literacy courses. Each course lasts a month. Women receive certificates after completing the courses.”
‘Women participate in the labor force after completing the courses’
Speaking about the first aid training courses, Jawaher Ezzo said, “The aim of the courses is to teach women both theoretical and practical knowledge so that they can deal with first aid emergencies and that they can be nurses. Women participate in the labor force after completing the vocational and training courses of the foundation. We call on all women to believe in themselves and achieve success in all facets of life.”
‘I want to be a nurse’
Sabreen Ahmed has lived in Washokani camp for four years. She is one of the women who completed the first aid training courses. “When I heard the first aid training courses would be opened by the Free Women Foundation, I enrolled in a course. I learned both theoretical and practical knowledge to deal with first aid emergencies. I want to be a nurse in the future. I call on all women in the camp to attend the courses to improve themselves.”
